History of the house
Villa-Finland

Shortly after Finland became independent in the year 1917, the educational system was restructured.

What now is Villa Finland was part of the structural change. With the construction of
the “Vanha Koulu”  (old school) the plan of decentralization and the availability of school education in countryside communities was introduced.

The foundation stone for Villa-Finland was set in 1926.

For almost 50 years all children of the neighbouring area were receiving their future education in two grades.

The school was located in the main building. The teacher’s family lived in the smaller house, just opposite. They cared for the schoolyard and the adjacent buildings.

The former depot had been used as a sporting and storage room.

The two large classrooms were located in the central area of today’s ground floor and in the larger part of the upper floor.

Pupils took their lunch in the same kitchen as today, in connection with the dining-room.

The school toilets, which had no water access at this time, were in the opposite building.

The history of the house tells us also of a “special” person who worked here for a few months. It was Mauno Koivisto, former president of Finland (1982 - 1994) worked for some time in the “Vanha Koulu”.

Still today, many former pupils live in the neighbourhood of the Villa-Finland and remember happily the past times of “their” old school.

After the schooling education stopped, (in 1973), the house had some private owners.

During that time, some changes were made, e.g. the transfer of the large school stairs, although they are still the original stairs today, just in another position.

Finally in 1994, a German entrepreneur bought the villa and renewed it in the old craftmanship style. Thus the original structure was kept completely intact.
Today it stays as a very impressive example of the Finnish timber construction tradition.

Nevertheless, considering the age of the house, some heavy renewals were inevitable.

Among other things, the entire roof was replaced using the special crease technology of steel sheets. All of the windows were replaced. A completely new heating system was installed and the electrical system replaced to support current needs and safety requirements.

The total time of the renewal and renovation took about 5 years.

During that time the original wood work was united with the newest technology under the same roof.

Today we have the perfect marriage of traditional and modern styles. Features of the house include under-floor heating in the Sauna, wireless LAN on the entire property, satellite availability and fibreglass connections.

Today the Villa-Finland is a shining star and awaiting our guests to give all the comfort and luxury they desire.
